Angel’s Trumpets in Your Summer Garden

by Laurelynn Martin and Byron Martin

The word angel conjures up the notion of ethereal, beautiful, healing, hope and more. When we use the word Angel, we are describing Angel’s Trumpets from the genus Brugmansia and they conjure up a similar list of words to entice the gardener. Their intoxicating nighttime fragrance, variety of colors and their most spectacular long-fluted flowers in the shape of heavenly trumpets are a welcoming sight in any garden bed or when grown as a large potted plant.

Angel’s Trumpets are fast growers when given full sun and plenty of fertilizer. Cooler nights and shorter days give way to an abundance of blooms, usually at the end of the summer and well into the fall. Here’s a list of a few of our favorite reliable bloomers for all to enjoy.

Angel’s Trumpet ‘Angel’s Summer Dream’ p.p.a.f. (Brugmansia hybrid) is a Logee’s exclusive hybrid and one of our favorites for its low-growing habit which makes it spectacular as a potted plant or in a large hanging basket. The 5-6” long, orange-yellow flowers have darker orange tones when fully mature and they emit a delightful nighttime fragrance. ‘Angel’s Summer Dream’ was named after our daughter, Angel, who loves the summer and this hybrid loves the summertime as well, flowering continuously from summer to fall once it reaches 12” in height.

Angel’s Trumpet ‘Audrey Lea’ (Brugmansia hybrid) has had the coveted position of being a front cover for our catalogue. The stunning double flowers range in color from watermelon to coral to pink. As the flowers mature, the ends roll up making the fancy tails on the double skirt at the bottom of each bloom more evident. The flowers measure 12” long and 5” wide and they have an intense nighttime fragrance. ‘Audrey Lea’ makes a sensational statement wherever it’s grown whether as an accent plant in the summer garden or in a container on a patio. This free-flowering hybrid needs full sun to grow and flower at its best.

Its upright, compact growth habit makes it an ideal container plant for a patio or deck or as a stunning focal point in a garden bed. ‘Moonlight Glow’ was hybridized in the UK by Hurstwood Brugmansias. We were impressed by its prolific blooming nature throughout our New England summer and its intense, delightful fragrance. You’ll want to experience ‘Moonlight Glow’ in your own garden.

Angel’s Trumpet ‘Orange Julius’ (Brugmansia hybrid) has double, golden-orange, trumpet-shaped flowers with fancy double skirts at the bottom of the blooms and upright tails. The flowers will sometimes have a flower-within-a-flower form. The flowers bloom in cycles, from spring to fall, from the upright branches. If you live in a northern climate, the plant is easily wintered over, either in a sunny exposure inside the home or in a cool spot (like a basement or garage) that doesn’t freeze where it will go into a dormant state for the winter. Like all in this genus, ‘Orange Julius’ loves full sun with plenty of water and abundant fertilizer.
