3 Delightful Plants Moms Will Love
by Laurelynn Martin, Logee’s Co-Owner
This year, Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 14. Whether your Mom loves herbs, beautiful flowers or tasty fruits, we have some favorite picks for her special day…
Rosemary Bonsai
We picked our Rosemary Bonsai (Rosemary prostratus) for its fragrant evergreen needles that has a place in the culinary kitchen and the medicine cabinet alike. There is nothing like fresh sprigs of Rosemary for a savory dish or the stress-reducing scent of Rosemary every time the needles are brushed as you pass by. These one year old plants have been trained with wire and pruned by one of our Logee’s growers. Clusters of light blue flowers appear intermittently throughout the year. They prefer it dry and do well on a sunny windowsill but when grown in a bonsai pot, it’s best to water daily.
‘Magic Art’ Phalaenopsis Orchid
Orchids are a main stay in garden collections. Their ease of care, long blooming cycle and attractive flowers beckon even first time gardeners to join in on the gardening craze. We picked a Phalaenopsis orchid called ‘Magic Art’ for its large-sized blooms and light scent. ‘Magic Art’ is also considered a “wild color” orchid meaning the colors are not stable and at times the colors will revert to pure burgundy with white petal edges instead of the opposite of a white bloom with splashes of light and dark pink throughout the petals and lip. Whichever color blooms, we’re quite sure, you will love having this orchid in your collection.
‘Top Hat’ Blueberry
The last pick is a dwarf Blueberry called ‘Top Hat’. We love ‘Top Hat’ for its wide appeal in all gardening situations. If you’re a container gardener, ‘Top Hat’ is an ideal plant for a large container on a deck or patio. If you have an outdoor garden in zones 3-7, then ‘Top Hat’ can be planted directly in the ground. It’s a self-fertile variety so first time gardeners can try one plant and seasoned gardeners can make a statement with a row of blueberries. ‘Top Hat’ produces an abundance of large berries in mid-summer. Make sure to grow in well-drained, acidic soil and give full sun.
