Tropical Pitcher Plant ‘Lady Luck’ (Nepenthes hybrid)

Nepenthes, also known as tropical pitcher plants, is a genus of carnivorous plants comprised of roughly 150 species. Native to parts of South East Asia, India, Madagascar and Australia, these plants are also sometimes referred to as “monkey cups” because of the monkeys that have been seen drinking rainwater from them. A cross between Nepenthes ventricosa and Nepenthes ampullaria, our ‘Lady Luck‘ has been bred for its ability to produce an abundance of bright red pitchers filled with secretions that attract and digest insects:

These pitcher plants require partial sun, preferably an eastern or western exposure. Although they can tolerate cool temperatures, it is better to keep them above 60°F. An easy grower, it’s perfect for a hanging basket in a sunroom, on a sunny windowsill or outside in the warm weather. No pruning is required, and for the most part, insects or diseases do not harm pitcher plants.

Just remember, they come from tropical rainforests. High humidity is a plus as they need constant moisture at their roots. Like orchids, if you put them outside in the summer, place in a partially sunlit location under a tree where it gets some direct sunlight but not hot afternoon sun.
