Four Flowering Plants Mom Will Just Love!
By Laurelynn Martin
Special women in your life deserve to be recognized. I know for me, my Mom is the one person I turn to in times of great sorrow or great joy, and flowers have become a tradition to express the joy and love I feel for her. I realize I am fortunate that my Mom is still with us. For those of you who have lost your Mom, or if you have never had a close relationship, then this Mother’s Day pick a woman who made a difference in your life and think about honoring her with some flowering plants. Here are four customer favorites that make the perfect gift, and are sure to bring her happiness for years to come…
This Mother’s Day we have picked flowering plants that say it all. Like Phalaenopsis Orchid Multiflora ‘Prima Piano’ (Phalaenopsis hybrid) This plant has at least two flower spikes with 6-8 blossoms on each spike. The white flowers have fuchsia pink centers and rays of pink that radiate throughout the petals. The blooms last 2-3 months for a long season of enjoyment. What I like most about this orchid is the coloring of pure white petals with pink accents that bring a sense of femininity to the garden.
One of our dinner-plate-sized tropical hibiscus called ‘Beautiful Desire’ (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis hybrid) is another display of love and beauty with its hot-pink petals and deep rich plum hues. An unusual and exciting color combination you’ll want to share, it flowers freely throughout the year when grown in a sunny spot with lots of fertilizer and water.
Are you looking for an impressive, fragrant, flowering plant? One of my favorites is Angel’s Trumpet ‘Angel’s Summer Dream’ p.p.a.f. (Brugmansia hybrid). This Logee hybrid was named after my daughter, Angel. It has a dwarf growth habit but still produces full size 5-6” orange flowers. Like all Angel’s Trumpets, its delightful nighttime scent fills the air once the sun goes down. ‘Angel’s Summer Dream’ makes a wonderful hanging basket or container plant and when placed near a door or window the evening scent causes you to pause and enjoy its delightful aroma.
Rounding out the selection of flowering plants for Mom is this unique gift of Bearded Dianthus (Dianthus hybrid). The combination of frilly colors brings a touch of whimsy into that special someone’s life. Bearded Dianthus stands out because of its unique flowers with petals that look like a paper doll cut-out. They come four planted to a pot in color spectrums ranging from white, to pink, violet and red. It blooms from early spring into summer. If maintained in a pot, it will re-bloom the following year. One note of caution: Avoid high heat and give cooler temperatures for best blooming results.
