Mother’s Day Gift Ideas: Four Fabulous Flowering Plants Moms Will Just Love!
by Laurelynn Martin and Byron Martin
Mother’s Day is almost here again (it’s Sunday, May 13, 2018). So if you’re looking for the perfect Mother’s Day gift idea, what better way to honor the special women in your life than with beautiful blooms that will flower year after year! Whether a mother, aunt, sister, daughter, cousin, teacher or friend, we take great pride at Logee’s in growing plants that will bring joy to those you love. Here are four Mother’s Day gift ideas sure to delight moms all year round:
You can never go wrong with orchids, especially easy-to-grow Phalaenopsis orchids. The one we picked called ‘Magic Art’ is lightly fragrant and has attractive blooms that are usually white with splashes of light and dark pink but may, at times, come out as all burgundy with white petal edges. Referred to as a “wild color” which simply means, like nature itself, which color combination you get is unpredictable. ‘Magic Art’ flowers can reach up to 4” across and the spikes are usually about 20” long. Flowers last 2-3 months. So, while Mother’s Day will be long over, ‘Magic Art’ will still be flowering bringing pleasure to the ones you love.
The next pick is dramatic for its outrageous size and vivid color. Match the personality of your special someone on Mother’s Day to Hibiscus ‘Orange Cappuccino.’ We are sure she won’t be disappointed. The massive flowers can reach 9-10” across and the electric orange color has pure white centers that emanate outward. Mom will enjoy ‘Orange Cappuccino’ flowers this summer.
For those on your gift list who want windowsill color inside the home and an easy-care plant then Crown of Thorns ‘Sunkist’ might be the right choice. It has vivid orange flowers that open in shades of yellow with orange highlights. This Thai Giant Euphorbia has flowers that reach 1-2” across and large flower clusters. It blooms heavily in the spring and summer months. As most succulents, this is a forgiving houseplant and likes to be grown on the drier side, watering only when the soil is dry.
We’ve saved the best for last! Angel’s Trumpet ‘Audrey Lea’ is one of those brugmansias that is absolutely stunning. And, we would be remiss if we didn’t tell you that this special Angel’s Trumpet is a Fred Sommer’s hybrid that was named after his mother. ‘Audrey Lea’ has double flowers with a unique color combination ranging from watermelon to coral and pink. The flowers measure 12” long and 5” wide and have an intense night time fragrance. What we love best is that by the end of the summer, ‘Audrey Lea’ will have multiple flowers and make a sensational statement in any summer garden or a fantastic accent plant in a container on a patio. Give full sun and lots of water and fertilizer to have many blooms this season.
Although we only chose four flowering plants for this special day, there are many more choices for all kinds of sun exposure and care levels. If your recipient is a beginning gardener, you may want to try a plant from our indestructible collection. And, if you are a little more adventurous, you could try plants from our rare collections. But whatever your level of expertise, there is something for everyone at Logee’s. Before you go, please be sure to explore our selection of fruiting, rare and tropical plants.
